"Top" depends on what you care about. For some people it's the lowest premium; for others it's rewards, a broker who'll fight their claim, or a policy that suits an older car. Start with the question that matters most to you:
See our best car insurance in South Africa page for picks by need, and always compare at least three quotes.
Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.
There are dozens of licensed non-life insurers and many more brands, because one insurer often runs several brands. For example, Santam owns MiWay, and Telesure Investment Holdings runs brands including Budget Insurance and the comparison site Hippo. What matters for you is who underwrites your policy, which is always named on your policy schedule.
Santam describes itself as South Africa's leading short-term insurer, and groups such as OUTsurance, Old Mutual Insure, Hollard and Momentum Insure are also major players. Size doesn't guarantee the best price or service for you, so compare quotes and read the policy terms.
Check that the insurer or broker is an authorised financial services provider on the FSCA's FSP search, and that the insurer is licensed by the Prudential Authority. Every legitimate policy schedule names the insurer and its FSP number.
An insurer carries the risk and pays claims. An underwriting manager designs and runs policies on behalf of an insurer, usually sold through brokers. Affinity is an example of an underwriting manager.
Yes. Complain to the insurer first. If that doesn't resolve it, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles short-term insurance complaints for free.
Tracker Prices SA is an independent information site. We are not an insurer or a licensed financial services provider, and nothing here is financial advice. Insurer details are summarised from each insurer's own published information, last checked September 2026. Cover, benefits and prices change, so always confirm them in your quote and policy wording. For a complaint about an insurer you can contact the free National Financial Ombud Scheme.
Tell us about your car once and we'll arrange for quotes to be sent to you, so you can compare premiums and excesses side by side.
