Best Car Insurance in South Africa: Our Picks by Need

The best car insurance depends on your car, how you drive and what you want from an insurer. Instead of one "winner", here are our picks for the most common needs, with the reasoning, so you know which insurers to put on your quote shortlist.

How we chose: we compared each insurer's published cover, rewards and way of buying. No insurer pays to be listed. We don't compare premiums, because yours depends on your car, driver profile and area. Always get at least three quotes.

1. Best for staying claim-free: OUTsurance

OUTsurance says it pays back 10% of your paid premiums in cash after three consecutive claim-free years, and its excesses are fixed, so you know upfront what a claim would cost.

Read our OUTsurance Car Insurance guide → Also consider: Santam, Nedbank.

2. Best for driving rewards: Discovery Insure

Vitality Drive scores your driving through an app and pays rewards, advertised at up to R1,500 a month back on fuel and Gautrain on the Classic and Purple plans. Worth it only if you'll engage with the programme.

Read our Discovery Car Insurance guide → Also consider: Absa.

3. Best for banking rewards: FNB

FNB clients can earn up to 15% of their premium back in eBucks, and FNB lists a rental car excess waiver benefit. Offers all three standard cover types.

Read our FNB Car Insurance guide → Also consider: Absa, Nedbank.

4. Best for older or lower-value cars: MiWay

MiWay's Lite and Total Loss levels let you pay for less cover on a car where full comprehensive doesn't make sense, with a flexible excess.

Read our MiWay Car Insurance guide → Also consider: OUTsurance, Budget Insurance.

5. Best for tailoring cover online: dotsure.co.za

Dotsure's Name Your Price model lets you switch parts of the cover on or off (night, weekend, windscreen, hail) and advertises a discount for buying online.

Read our Dotsure Car Insurance guide → Also consider: Budget Insurance.

6. Best for a keen price and simple extras: Budget Insurance

Budget Insurance offers an annual payment holiday, a cash back bonus after two claim-free years and a discount for buying online.

Read our Budget Car Insurance guide → Also consider: MiWay, dotsure.co.za.

7. Best for broker advice and claims help: Santam

Santam, part of the Sanlam group, still sells mainly through brokers, who advise you and help at claim time. You can also get a direct online quote.

Read our Santam Car Insurance guide → Also consider: Old Mutual Insure, PSG Insure.

8. Best for VW owners: Volkswagen Financial Services

Volkswagen Financial Services' comprehensive cover, underwritten by Budget Insurance Company, promises repairs to factory specification with genuine parts.

9. Best for comparing many quotes fast: Hippo

Not an insurer, but Hippo says it can show up to 13 car insurance quotes in about two minutes, free of charge.

What makes car insurance "good"

  • The right cover for the car. Comprehensive for a financed or valuable car; a cheaper level for an older car you could replace.
  • An excess you can afford. Including the additional excesses that apply to your drivers. See what excess means.
  • Conditions you can keep. Tracker, parking and driver rules you'll actually follow every day.
  • Clear claims. Easy ways to claim, and a policy wording you've read before you need it.
  • A fair premium this year. Re-quote at renewal; loyalty doesn't always get rewarded.
A tracker can lower your premium

Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.

Best car insurance questions

What is the best car insurance in South Africa?+

There isn't one best insurer for everyone. The best policy for you is the one with the right cover for your car, an excess you can afford, conditions you can meet, and a fair premium. Our picks point you to strong options for specific needs, but you should still compare quotes.

How did you choose these picks?+

We compared insurers' published features: cover types, reward schemes, how you buy and who underwrites the cover. We don't test premiums, because they depend on each driver, and no insurer pays to be listed here.

Which car insurance pays claims best?+

No public ranking measures that fairly for every insurer. The National Financial Ombud Scheme publishes complaint information, and reading your policy wording before you buy is the best protection against a rejected claim.

Is the cheapest car insurance the best?+

Not always. A cheap premium can come with a high excess, a lower insured value or missing cover such as car hire. Compare the total cost you'd pay if you claimed, not just the monthly premium.

Tracker Prices SA is an independent information site. We are not an insurer or a licensed financial services provider, and nothing here is financial advice. Insurer details are summarised from each insurer's own published information, last checked September 2026. Cover, benefits and prices change, so always confirm them in your quote and policy wording. For a complaint about an insurer you can contact the free National Financial Ombud Scheme.

Find your best option

The only way to know which insurer is best for your car is to compare quotes like-for-like.
