Direct insurer (Santam group)

MiWay Car Insurance: Cover Levels, Excess and Extras

MiWay is a direct insurer owned by Santam. It offers three levels of car cover (Comprehensive, Lite and Total Loss), so you can match what you pay to the value of the car rather than defaulting to full cover.

Its standard excess is flexible: you can raise it to lower your premium or reduce it and pay more each month. That's useful, but only if you could comfortably pay the higher excess on a bad day.

What stands out

  • Three cover levels: Comprehensive, Lite and Total Loss.
  • Liability cover MiWay lists: R5,000,000 on Comprehensive, R2,500,000 on Lite and R250,000 on Total Loss.
  • A flexible standard excess (MiWay shows R5,000 as the default) that you can move up or down.
  • WeDrive: take-me-home rides in your own car, and Micashback rewards.
  • 24/7 roadside help on all cover levels.

What to check before you accept a quote

  • Exactly what Lite leaves out compared to Comprehensive before you choose it to save money.
  • The excess you've chosen, and any extra excesses that apply on top of it.
  • How Micashback is earned and when it pays out.
  • The basic excess and any additional excesses, for example for young or newly licensed drivers. See what excess means in car insurance.
  • Whether your car needs an approved tracker. Many insurers require one above a certain vehicle value. See insurance-approved trackers.

How to get a MiWay car insurance quote

  1. Get a quote online or in the MiWay app in a few minutes.
  2. Compare the same car on Comprehensive and Lite to see the real saving.
  3. Try two excess levels and pick the one you could actually afford to pay.

Comparing is easier when every quote is for the same thing: the same cover type, the same car value (retail or market value) and similar excess. Our guide to comparing car insurance quotes has a checklist.

A tracker can lower your premium

Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.

MiWay Car Insurance questions

Who owns MiWay?+

MiWay is a direct insurer owned by Santam, one of South Africa's largest short-term insurers. MiWay is licensed in its own right (FSP 33970).

What is MiWay Total Loss cover?+

Total Loss is MiWay's most basic level of car cover. It's aimed at paying out when a car is written off or stolen, not at repairing everyday damage, and it carries much lower liability cover than Comprehensive.

Can I change my excess with MiWay?+

Yes. MiWay's standard excess is flexible, so you can choose a higher excess for a lower premium or a lower excess for a higher premium.

Tracker Prices SA is an independent information site. We are not an insurer or a licensed financial services provider, and nothing here is financial advice. Insurer details are summarised from each insurer's own published information, last checked September 2026. Cover, benefits and prices change, so always confirm them in your quote and policy wording.
