Beyond the Headline Price

How Plan Tiers Actually Compare

Most providers sell four rough tiers, even if they use different names for them. Here's what typically separates one tier from the next, with real plan names and prices where they're published.

TierCartrackNetstarMatrix Vehicle TrackingWhat The Tier Adds
Basic / StarterQuick — R99/monthSTARtag — R89/monthStolen-vehicle recovery, a mobile app, and a 24/7 control room
Silver / PlusQuick Plus — R149/monthPlus — R149/monthSilver — R219/monthReal-time tracking, geo-fence zones, and basic driver-behaviour data
Gold / ExecQuick Exec — R199/monthPlatinum — R249/monthGold — R299/monthCrash detection and alerts, driver scorecards, extended trip history
Premium / FleetExec Plus — R299/monthFleet Premium — R299/monthPremium — R329/monthDashcam options, multi-vehicle portals, full driver analytics and insurance-grade reporting

Titan Secure doesn't follow this tier structure — it offers the same smart-engine feature set (remote fuel cut, lock-tamper detection, 24/7 emergency response) across three billing styles instead: R199/month on a rolling basis, a once-off fee that covers two years, or an all-inclusive finance plan with no upfront cost over 36 months.

What Actually Moves a Car Tracker Quote Up or Down

Feature Depth

A passive logger and a fully-monitored, insurance-grade unit with dashcam integration can sit R200-plus/month apart, even from the same provider. Pay for the tier that matches how the vehicle is actually used, not the longest feature list on the page.

Contract Length

A 36-month contract is the industry default and usually unlocks the lowest monthly figure, sometimes with free installation thrown in. Month-to-month billing costs more per month but avoids being locked in if your circumstances change.

Installation Type

Free installation is common on longer contracts; a standalone hardwired install otherwise runs roughly R1,899 to R3,299. Plug-in OBD units skip this cost entirely but trade off some of the tamper-resistance a hidden, hardwired unit offers.

Provider & Insurance Status

Providers with a long track record and a large recovery network can charge a premium for that reputation. An insurance-approved device may also cost a little more up front, but it's often what unlocks the 15-30% premium discount insurers advertise.

Ways to Pay Less

Opt for a longer contract if you're confident you'll keep the vehicle; ask specifically about free-installation promotions; strip out features you won't use (driver scorecards matter far less for a car that never leaves the driveway); and check with your insurer whether they discount for a specific brand before you commit to another.

When a DIY Option Makes Sense

Plug-in OBD trackers typically cost R750 to R2,500 upfront with no professional install and no monthly recovery-network fee layered on top. They suit short-term needs like a rental or a car you're about to sell, but they generally skip the recovery network, insurance approval, and support that a professionally fitted unit includes.

Do This Before You Sign Anything

How to Compare Car Tracker Quotes Properly

Two quotes that look similar on price can be very different once you read the fine print. Work through this order before you pick a provider.

Get the all-in monthly price

Ask for the number that already includes VAT, not a base rate with VAT added at checkout. Every price on this page includes it, and any quote you receive should too.

Ask about installation, in writing

"Free installation" sometimes only applies to a specific contract length or a specific vehicle type. Get the installation fee for your exact situation before you compare it against another provider's number.

Check the contract length and exit terms

A lower monthly figure on a 36-month term isn't automatically better than a slightly higher month-to-month rate. Ask what it costs to cancel early, and whether the device or SIM stays active if you miss a payment.

Confirm insurance-approval status

If a premium discount is part of your reason for fitting a tracker, confirm with your insurer, not just the tracker provider, that the specific device and plan qualifies before you sign anything.

Compare the feature set, not just the number

Line up what each tier actually includes — live tracking versus passive logging, driver-behaviour reports, crash detection, geo-fencing — against what you'll realistically use, using the tier table above as a starting point.

Ask about the recovery network

Response times and recovery rates vary by provider and aren't always advertised upfront. It's a reasonable question to ask directly, especially if theft recovery is your main reason for fitting a tracker at all.

Comparison Questions We Get Asked Often

A few things worth knowing before you start comparing quotes across providers.

Is the cheapest car tracker plan always the right pick?+

Not necessarily. A cheap entry-level plan might not include real-time tracking or the recovery network you were expecting. Use the tier table above to check what a low headline price actually includes before you decide it's the better deal.

Should I compare 36-month and month-to-month pricing separately?+

Yes — they're not really the same product. A 36-month price usually comes with a lower monthly figure and sometimes free installation, while month-to-month costs more per month in exchange for the flexibility to cancel without a long lock-in.

Can one enquiry get me quotes from more than one provider?+

Yes, that's the point of this site — fill in one quote request or message us below with what you need, and we'll help point you toward providers that fit your vehicle, budget and feature requirements.

Does the price change depending on the vehicle I drive?+

Generally no for private vehicles — pricing tends to be standard across sedans, SUVs and bakkies. Commercial vehicles and fleets are the exception, since fleet-management features are usually billed differently. See our vehicle types and fleet tracking pages for details.

What should make me suspicious of a quote?+

Be cautious of any quote that asks for a large upfront payment without a clear breakdown, doesn't mention VAT, or can't tell you the cancellation terms when asked directly. Reputable providers are straightforward about all of this.
