Hippo Car Insurance Quotes: How Hippo Works

Hippo.co.za is a comparison site, not an insurer. You fill in one form, and Hippo shows you car insurance quotes from several partner insurers. If you choose one, the insurer contacts you and your policy is with that insurer, not Hippo.

Hippo is part of the Telesure Investment Holdings (TIH) group, which also owns insurance brands. Hippo says most of its partners aren't TIH brands, but it's worth knowing when you read the results.

What stands out

  • Free to use: Hippo says there are no fees for customers.
  • Hippo says it can show up to 13 car insurance quotes in about two minutes.
  • Hippo is an authorised financial services provider (FSP 16357).
  • Hippo earns a fee from brands when customers ask for more information.

What to check before you accept a quote

  • Not every insurer is on Hippo. Hippo itself says some major brands don't take part, so check big names separately.
  • Comparison quotes are indicative. Confirm the final premium and excess with the insurer before you buy.
  • You'll likely get calls from the insurers you pick, so only select the ones you're interested in.
  • The basic excess and any additional excesses, for example for young or newly licensed drivers. See what excess means in car insurance.
  • Whether your car needs an approved tracker. Many insurers require one above a certain vehicle value. See insurance-approved trackers.

How to get a Hippo car insurance quote

  1. Fill in Hippo's car insurance form with accurate details.
  2. Shortlist two or three results and check their excess, not just the premium.
  3. Get a direct quote from any major insurer that doesn't appear on Hippo.

Comparing is easier when every quote is for the same thing: the same cover type, the same car value (retail or market value) and similar excess. Our guide to comparing car insurance quotes has a checklist.

A tracker can lower your premium

Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.
