FNB Car Insurance: Cover Types, eBucks and How to Quote

FNB sells car insurance underwritten by FirstRand Short Term Insurance, part of the FirstRand group. You can get a quote in the FNB app, and FNB offers all three standard cover types.

The big draw for existing FNB clients is eBucks: FNB says you can earn up to 15% of your premium back in eBucks each month, depending on your eBucks level.

What stands out

  • All three cover types: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, and third party only.
  • eBucks: FNB advertises up to 15% of your premium back in eBucks monthly.
  • Car rental benefit: an excess waiver on rental car accidents, up to R30,000 per claim (with a stated R4,500 excess).
  • 24/7 roadside, emergency medical and trauma support.
  • Scratch and dent cover as an optional add-on.

What to check before you accept a quote

  • Which eBucks level you're on, since the 15% is the maximum, not the norm.
  • How the car rental excess waiver works and when it applies.
  • Whether the premium is still competitive if you ignore eBucks.
  • The basic excess and any additional excesses, for example for young or newly licensed drivers. See what excess means in car insurance.
  • Whether your car needs an approved tracker. Many insurers require one above a certain vehicle value. See insurance-approved trackers.

How to get a FNB car insurance quote

  1. Get a quote in the FNB app.
  2. Ask what eBucks level you'd earn at, and compare the premium without eBucks.
  3. Compare against two other insurers for the same cover and excess.

Comparing is easier when every quote is for the same thing: the same cover type, the same car value (retail or market value) and similar excess. Our guide to comparing car insurance quotes has a checklist.

A tracker can lower your premium

Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.
