AARTO changes how traffic fines are issued and paid. The demerit points part is coming but not yet active.

AARTO dates have changed several times. This page reflects the position in late July 2026; always check official RTIA announcements.
When it starts, drivers will begin with zero points and get points for offences depending on how serious they are. Going over the threshold will lead to a licence suspension, and repeated suspensions to cancellation. The threshold is expected to be 15 points, but the final rules and start date still need to be gazetted.
A 1 September 2026 start date for demerit points was widely reported but later withdrawn. Check the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) and official government announcements for the current date before relying on any article.
Businesses will be accountable for fines incurred in company vehicles. Keep accurate records of who drives each vehicle; a fleet management system with driver identification makes nominating drivers easier.
