Official prices per litre, effective Wednesday, 2 September 2026. Petrol prices are regulated retail prices; diesel prices are wholesale, so pump prices vary slightly between filling stations.

Inland prices (Gauteng, including Johannesburg and Pretoria) are higher than coastal prices (Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha) because fuel has to be transported from the coast. Prices in other towns are set by zones and can differ slightly.
The government regulates petrol prices and adjusts them monthly. The adjustment is announced near the end of the month and takes effect on the first Wednesday of the next month. It mainly reflects:
Diesel’s international price is currently higher than petrol’s because of strong global demand from trucking, shipping, mining and farming and tight refining capacity. South Africa now imports most of its refined diesel and petrol after several local refineries closed, so international product prices and the exchange rate pass straight through to the pump.
South Africa produces some fuel locally, including synthetic fuel from coal and gas, but imports most of its refined petrol and diesel. Crude oil has historically come mainly from the Middle East and West Africa.
