Car Insurance Near Me: Local Broker or Direct Insurer?

Most car insurance in South Africa is sold nationally, online or by phone, so the insurer doesn't need to be near you. What "near me" usually means is a local broker who can advise you face to face, or a branch you can walk into. Here's when that's worth it, and how to check a broker before you trust them with your cover.

Local broker vs direct insurer

A local broker is good if…

You want advice, you have several cars or a business vehicle, your claims history is complicated, or you want someone in your corner at claim time.

Buying direct is good if…

You're comfortable comparing quotes yourself, want the quickest process and no broker fee, and are happy to handle claims online or by phone.

How to check a car insurance broker near you

  1. Ask for the broker's FSP number and look it up on the FSCA FSP search.
  2. Check they're authorised for short-term personal lines insurance, which is what car insurance falls under.
  3. Ask which insurers they work with and how many they'll compare for you.
  4. Ask whether they charge a broker fee on top of the premium, and get it in writing.
  5. Ask how they help with claims, and who you call at night or over a weekend.

How where you live changes your premium

Your address is one of the biggest pricing factors. Insurers look at theft, hijacking and accident rates where the car is kept overnight, and at how it's kept: a locked garage is priced very differently from street parking. In high-risk areas, many insurers also require an approved tracker on higher-value cars.

If you're in a high-theft area, a tracker can pay for itself through a lower premium. See our theft risk checker and our guide to tracker installation areas.

Getting quotes without leaving home

Whether you use a broker or not, you can get most car insurance quotes online. Use our car insurance quotes page to request quotes, or see all car insurance companies in South Africa to quote directly.

A tracker can lower your premium

Many insurers require an approved tracker on higher-value cars, and most give a discount when one is fitted. See which trackers insurers accept or estimate your saving.

Car insurance near me: questions

Is it better to use a local car insurance broker?+

It can be, if you want advice and someone to help you at claim time. A local broker knows the area's risks and repairers. A direct insurer is often quicker and has no broker fee. Get quotes both ways and compare.

How do I check that a local broker is registered?+

Ask for their FSP number and look it up on the Financial Sector Conduct Authority's (FSCA) FSP search. Also check that the broker is authorised for short-term personal lines insurance.

Does my area affect my car insurance premium?+

Yes. Insurers price the risk of theft, hijacking and accidents where the car is kept overnight, so moving suburb can change your premium. Always tell your insurer if your address changes.

Can I get car insurance without visiting an office?+

Yes. Most South African car insurance is bought online, in an app or over the phone. Some insurers may ask for an inspection or photos of the car before cover starts.
