What Is Beame?

Beame is a small, wireless stolen-vehicle recovery unit sold by Matrix, the consumer brand of MiX by Powerfleet. Here is what it is, who is behind it and what it costs.

Beame in one paragraph

Beame is a vehicle recovery product, not a live tracker. The unit is roughly the size of a matchbox, runs on its own battery (up to three years) and is hidden in the vehicle in a few minutes. Because it is not connected to the car’s electrics, it does not affect the vehicle’s warranty and does not drain the car battery. When you report a theft, the Beame operations centre activates recovery and its agents locate the unit anywhere in South Africa.

Who owns Beame? Matrix, MiX Telematics and Powerfleet

Beame and Matrix are consumer brands of MiX Telematics, a South African vehicle telematics company that merged with US-based Powerfleet in 2024. Beame’s website now carries the “Beame by Powerfleet” name, which is why you will see searches for “matrix beame”, “beame mix telematics” and “matrix/beame” – they all refer to the same product. Matrix and Beame share the same Midrand office (Waterfall Office Park, Unit 8 Howick Close, Vorna Valley, Midrand) and the same emergency line, 0800 111 322.

What does the name Beame mean?

Matrix has not published an official meaning. The name is usually read as a play on “beam me” – the unit beams its location to the recovery team once a theft is reported. It has nothing to do with the former New York mayor Abraham Beame, which is why some searches for “beame” show unrelated results.
