With the auto-arm tag, the unit arms when you walk away with the tag and disarms when the tag is back in the car. The arming status shows in the Netstar app (on the scrolling bar near the bottom of the screen in the Safe and Sound app). Keep the tag with your keys, and replace its battery when the app warns you.
If you drive a high-risk model or park on the street, the early-warning alert can start recovery before the car goes far. If you mainly want low-cost recovery, Matrix Beame (R99) is cheaper; for a panic button with analytics and crash assist, compare Matrix Gold.
