Roadworthy Certificate Guide

When you need one

• Registering a used vehicle in a new owner’s name.
• Re-registering a rebuilt (Code 3) vehicle.
• When a traffic officer issues a notice to have the vehicle tested.
• Some public transport and commercial vehicles need regular tests.

What the test checks

• Brakes, steering and suspension.
• Lights, indicators and hooter.
• Tyres (at least 1 mm tread) and wheels.
• Windscreen, wipers and mirrors.
• Seatbelts and seats.
• Exhaust and oil leaks.
• VIN and engine numbers matching the registration papers.

Pass first time

1. Replace blown bulbs and cracked lenses.
2. Check tyre tread and spare wheel.
3. Fix windscreen cracks in the driver’s line of sight.
4. Make sure every seatbelt works.
5. Take the registration papers.
