Before you sign anything, put these questions to the provider or salesperson directly. This is a checklist for the sales conversation itself — installation, contract length, cancellation and hidden fees — not a guide to which tracker type suits you (see our guide to choosing the right tracker for that).
Your vehicle is one of your most valuable assets. Asking the right questions upfront ensures you choose a provider that actually delivers the security and features you're paying for.
Installation, activation and cancellation fees aren't always volunteered. Asking about them before you sign helps you understand the true cost of the contract, not just the advertised monthly figure.
What is the total upfront cost, including installation? Get a full breakdown of the device, installation, activation fee and any first-month charges before you agree to anything.
Are there any hidden fees I should know about? Ask specifically about early-cancellation penalties, additional-user fees, paper-statement charges and access to historical location data.
What is the contract length, and what happens at renewal? South African tracker contracts commonly run 24-60 months. Ask whether it auto-renews, and whether the price can increase after the initial term.
Do you offer a discount for multiple vehicles or annual payment? Some providers discount fleet installs or annual upfront payment versus paying monthly.
What exactly does 24/7 monitoring include? Ask whether the monitoring centre contacts you first or dispatches a response team immediately in an emergency, and what their average response time to a theft alert actually is.
Do you work with SAPS and recovery services? An established relationship with police and recovery teams can materially affect how quickly a stolen vehicle is located.
What happens if my vehicle is stolen and not recovered? Ask exactly what compensation, guarantee or support the provider offers in that outcome, in writing.
How does the tamper-alert system work? Understand what happens, and who gets notified, the moment someone interferes with the device.
Who performs the installation, and where? Ask whether it happens at your home or workplace, how long it takes, and whether it affects your vehicle's warranty.
Is the installation discreet, and is it compatible with my vehicle? Confirm it works with your specific make and model, integrates with any alarm system you already have, and supports the app or platform you'll actually use.
Be cautious of a provider who can't give straight, written answers about total cost.
Watch for contracts that renew automatically without clear advance notice.
Be wary of a provider that won't offer any trial period or money-back guarantee at all.
Check independent reviews for a pattern of unresolved service or billing complaints.
Before you sign anything, ideally as part of the same conversation as your quote. A provider's answers to these questions are as important as the headline price when deciding who to go with.
Treat that as a red flag. A reputable provider should be able to answer every question on this checklist plainly and in writing — hesitation or vague answers are worth taking seriously before you commit to a multi-year contract.
That's a separate decision based on your vehicle, budget and how you use it. See our guide to choosing the right tracker for a scenario-based walkthrough of which type and plan fits your situation.
